Moral Policing: From Our Celebrities to International Stars

Moral policing is becoming quite a problem in Pakistan. Thanks to social media, the populous has access to TV and Movie stars like never before. A few months back the moral police attacked Fahad Mirza and Sarwat Gillani because they took a pic of themselves showing each other affection in public, a pic which was then shared on Instagram to mass uproar.

The latest targets of the moral rage of Pakistanis aren’t are much battered stars but two international stars who are currently gracing Pakistani screens in the much hyped Islamic historical fiction drama Diriliş: Ertuğrul. The first to face backlash was actress Esra Bilgiç who shared a pic of her in all black on her instagram. Pakistanis seemed unable to separate the actress from the role she played on TV and was roundly chided for daring to forget she played an Islamic figure on TV. There are comments upon comments under her page urging her to wear the costume from her TV show. Why follow her page in the first place, if her acting and modeling offends you. Esra wasn’t the only Diriliş: Ertuğrul under fire, her co-star Engin Altan Düzyatan was also rebuked for daring to have a pet dog.

Here’s a glimpse of what the twitterati think about this fiasco:
